Gabriel
Gabriel Salazar Vergara was born on the 31st of January, 1936. He is Chilean historian. His fame is in his country for his study of sociology and its interpretation of popular movements, including the recent student protests of 2011, 2012 and 2006. Salazar was born to an impoverished family. He attended Universidad de Chile and studied the fields of sociology, philosophy and historical studies. Salazar also served as an assistant for Mario Gongora and Hector Herrera Cajas the classic historian. 1 Salazar was an active member of the Revolutionary Left Movement until 1973. 2. In the year 1973 his torture was carried out in Villa Grimaldi by the military. After being released from the prison camp for military and fleeing to England, he retreated. Then he received a grant for continued studies in University of Hull. He obtained an PhD in Economic and Social History from the university in the year 1984. After that after that, he returned to Chile. Relatively unknown Salazar's breakthrough came in 1985. He studied peons in addition to the proletariat and laborers. 1. Salazar is one of the founders of the current of historiography referred to by the name of Nueva Historia Social. Salazar regards history as an important tool for political action. In an interview, he declared himself to be a "leftist, critical historical socialist" and has rejected the term "Marxist"
